US District Court Released Indictment Against "Barbecue"

Attorney Jeanine Ferris speaks on the indictment against overpowering gang leader, Jimmy Chérizer.

What’s Happening in Haiti?

Last week, the United States District Court charged Jimmy Chérizer, also known as Barbecue, an indictment of $5 million dollars. This reward is offered to anyone who has information that can assist in his arrest. Chérizer is a well-known gang leader who has led the attacks on La Saille, G-Pèp and numerous communities in Haiti. Gang violence has continued to dominate Haiti for years. The rise in gun violence has led to a humanitarian crisis towards Haitian citizens. The country once known for its acts of independence against France, is now under severe instability both economically and hierarchically.

History of Haiti and Jimmy Chérizer

Jimmy Chérizer was a police officer under Former President Moïse. His contributions through law enforcement were destructive. He has led massacres with weaponry and resources funded under the Moise administration. After being fired from his role, he sought to restore Haiti back to stability by forming a coalition with gang members. His gang, G9 Family and Allies, has led to protests against Former President Moïse and authority over cities in exchange for his protection. His leadership in the government has granted him authority that he never should have had.

His leadership through gang violence has plummeted Haitian Independence. He now has control over 80% of Haiti, which continues to suffer at his hands. This country has one of the richest minerals and resources since the 18th century. Haiti’s freedom, control and resources were fought for under the Haitian Revolution. This full circle moment under Chérizer’s leadership has revealed how desperately Haiti needs aid to restore their country.

Next Steps to a #FREEHAITI

The United States District Court has arrested Bazile Richardson who has donated to fund Chérizer’s crimes. Although the US has offered a reward to put an end to Jimmy Chérizer, the United States' history with foreign affairs hasn’t been promising. We need to support activists and non profit organizations that share the latest news on Haiti. Additional news on how others have helped Haiti can be found here.
